From the domain in Okains Bay, head back up Okains Bay Road for ca 100 metres, to the stockyard beside a small bach. Track starts at the stockyard gates. (Remember to close and latch the gates after you.) |
Description |
The walking takes about 20-30 minutes each way, but the trip can easily take you half a day if you grab the opportunities that it offers for a dip and a sunbathe, or to explore some of the volcanic rocks exposed beside the track. From the stockyard, it's a steady climb for about 400 metres, then a similar distance downwards into Little Okains Bay. This holds a beautiful, sandy and sheltered beach offering some pleasant swimming. From here, the track continues up and around another headland, to a second bay and beach. Whether or not this is open to the public is somewhat uncertain, but there are no signs to tell you otherwise, and de facto it is well used by walkers. Do I leave it up to you what choice to make. In either case, the walk is well worth doing, and I defy you not to dawdle for a while in one or the other of the bays. |
