Description |
Akatarawa Forest is large, rugged and not altogether welcoming for the casual dog-walker. Many of the tracks are challenging, and many are used by 4WD vehicles and the more adventurous cyclists. The easiest walk is probably the Karapoti Gorge walk -an 11 km there-and-back walk from the end of Karapoti Road to McGhies Bridge, where there is a bathing pool. From Bridge Road there's also a good 8km walk up to Birchville Dam and then along Cannon Point Walkway to Cannon Point, returning via the Zig Zag down to Tulsa Reserve. Or, if you want a longer tramp, you can continue along Valley View Road and loop back along Three Skulls Road. Beyond that, you're into full-day tramping or more. |
