Manapouri Cycleway
After the rather brash and shallow newness of Te Anau, Manapouri is a welcome find. It sits by the lake, quiet and old-fashioned, and seeminlgy untouched by its rough and controversial past as the site of the biggest industrial scheme and the most deeply excavated lake in the country.
The cycleway is part of the Lake2Lake track, which when it's finished will run from Te Anau in the north to Manapouri in the south. At the moment, though, it's incomplete so that the middle section is along dusty gravel road and then on the highway for a while - not good for walking. From Manapouri township up to Supply Bay Road, however, there's a 2 km section which is a pleasant walk. In Manapouri, it can be accessed in various places, and here it's worth wandering off the track and down to Frazer's Beach, from which there are good views across the lake into the Kepler Ranges. Northwards, the track winds pleasantly through kanuka scrub and pine forest, and there are few enough cyclists around never to feel that you're in the way or likely to get zapped, but it's a good idea to keep the dog under strict control.
