Access |
Numerous access points in Lower Hutt, Petone and East Porirua. For immediate access to a variety of walks, Oakleigh Street is one of the best: take Dowes Drive at Maungaraki and follow this to the Oakleigh Street turning on the left; entrance and car parking are ca. 300 metres along the road. As an alternative, Dry Creek near the SH58/SH2 intersection, offers good access to zseveral tracks at the easrten end of the park, including the Dry Creek Track and the Boulder Hill Tramping Track. |
Description |
Belmont Regional Park contains about a dozen walks, though not all are dog-friendly, and unfortunately the park brochure is somewhat ambiguous about which ones are. From the Poruira side, a good option is the 3.5 km long Waihora Loop Track, which goes through a mixture of farmland and bush and gives stunnning views over Transmission Gully. An added attraction is that this walk is off-leash. Korokoro Dam is another good target for dog-friendly walks, best accessed from the Lower Hutt area. The Korokoro Stream Track is an 8 km each-way walk, starting from Cornish Street; or from Oakleigh Street you can do the shorter Koroko Dam Loop (ca. 3 km). From the Dry Creek entrance, there's a choice of a short (2.2 km) there-and-back walk to the small waterfall, or the 22 km hike on the Korokoro Traverse. The former is on-leash; whether dogs are allowed on the latter, isn't clear. |
