On the east side of Buller Bridge on SH67, at the entrance to Westport, turn north onto The Esplanade, then immediately left into the carpark. Track starts from NW corner of carpark.
Most of the newly-being-constructed Kawatiri Trail between Westport and Charleston is no-dogs, even though it takes in long sections of roadside footpath and several stretches of walkway that have historically been dog-friendly. Don't ask me why: just prejudice I guess. This small and rather dowdy stretch in Westport seems to be the only bit we can use. It's short, flat, rather boggy and passes through a typically scrappy stretch of lowland alder and willow scrub, beside the Buller River. But where there's not much else on offer, it has to serve. Instead, though, you might want to use the longer and somewhat more pleasant Kawatiri Beach Trail on the north side of town. Or maybe just head for somewhere where dogs are more welcome.
