Description |
Snowy Gorge Creek offers a challenging and largely unmarked route up onto the saddle at 1350 metres, where there nestles the small Snowy Gorge Hut. It's about 11 km, and a five hour climb (somewhat less for the return) so if you're fit you can probably just about manage a there-and-back walk in a long day. Note, though, that the trip requires a crossing of the Aruhiri River - and that has to be done both ways, of course! For a longer trip - 30 km one-way - and maybe overnighting in the hut, you can continue through the saddle and down into the Maitland Valley, to emerge at Lake Ohau. To pass over private land at the Lake Ohau end, however, you need the landowner's permission for both yourself and the dog. Either way, this route requires good tramping skills so is not for novices and best avoided when the river ius high or the weather likely to turn bad. |
