Description |
Two linked walks that give either an easy option on the flat by the river, or a larger circuit of what may, or may not, be called Deadman Hill, taking in the lookout point on the top. The former runs up one szide of the Inangahua River, as far as the suspension bridge, and then down the other. On the way it points several points of interest relating to Reefton's greatest claim to fame: namely that it was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lighting - in doing so, beating both New York and London (though maybe the slight difference in size had something to do with that). The Lookout Walk is also, aptly, known as the Zig-Zag walk, and dutifully zig-zags up the side of Deadman Creek, before ascending more gently via a forestry track up to the lookout. From there the gravel track winds down the hillside into Soldiers Creek before returning along the foot of the hill to join SH6. It's then a couple of hundred metres along the highway back to town. |
