Further information |
Compared to the walks at nearby Butcher's Dam, this one is modest - a mere 2 km in a short loop. It nevertheless presents a few challenges to the walker, not least because the correct route is difficult to find. According to the DoC map at the car park, near the dam, public access is limited to the near margins of the reservoir, and the trail runs close to the water. On the east side of the reservoir life is easy. There's a clear vehicle track, and beside it a more-or-less continuous but informal track through the grass, both of which are seemingly public. On the west side, however, the vehicle tracks are essentially out-of-bounds, and the correct route follows one of the several informal paths that meander through the grassland. Which one, is up to you to decide. Likewise, there's a stream at the west end of the reservoir that needs to be crossed. Which is the 'correct' route to do this isn't clear, but upstream a little way, there are rough stepping stones that you can hop through at low flow without getting more than a toe or two wet.
If you're willing to take on these minor challenges, this is a pleasant walk. The terrain is undulating, but never too rough, and the track is much less busy than most of the other tracks in the area - so it's a good place to escape the crowds, and offers some nice picnic spots.
