Description |
The large campsite at Holdsworth is perhaps one of the best places from which to explore the Tararuas, with a range of off-leash walks on offer, from short and easy loops to multi-day hikes. For an easy 2.5 km stroll Donnelly Flat loop can't be beaten, for it takes you through some of the best mixed podocarp forest in the ranges. For a longer but still easy walk take Gentle Annie Track up to Mountain House Shelter; with its gentle gradient, this 9 km there-and-back walk can easily be done in half a day, including Rocky Lookout on the way. For the more adventurous (and fit) hiker, the Mount Holdsworth Track offers anything from a one to three day tramp, to some exposed alpine ridges with wonderful views all around. And Barra Track, from The Pines entrance, provides access northwards along the Waingawa River, to link with another 20 km and more of tracks in Blue Range and the Ruamahanga River. |
