Access |
Several access points. though the obvious ones, off SH1, are more-or-less impossible if you are arriving by car, because of the lack of safe parking areas. To start from the north, the best option is to enter via the Centennial Park, from the entrance opposite Church Street on Otipua Road. Otherwise, the best bet is probably to head for Leckie Street Reserve or Redruth Reserve (take Shaw Street off SH1 on the south side of town, then turn onto Redruth Street) and follow the cycleway. |
Description |
A good, well-formed path beside Saltwater Creek meanders its way to through fields and trees to the saltmarshy area behind Scarborough Beach. Most of the way you're far enough from the industrial parks and rather characterless housing of Timaru not to feel too town-bound, and if you can negotiate your way to Otipua Wetlands on the other side of the river, that will add to the pleasures of the walk. Note, though, that the seaward end of the Creek can be remarkably green with duckweed and maybe other things that shouldn't be there - so be careful about letting your dog near the water. |
