Description |
Whitireia Park has a lot to offer. As well as a network of walks, comprising a long loop (Te Onepoto Loop Walk) and two linear branches along the coast, it gives access to a sheltered beach in Onehunga Bay, and within that an important historic site: the location of the anchor stone of the canoe of legendary Mäori explorer Kupe (now in Te Papa). In terms of dog walks, it's also a delight. Although the Park is partly farmed - and cattle graze the grasslands - dogs are permitted. The requirements vary, however, with some areas designated off-lwash and others on-leash - so keep your wits about you and follow the signs. The views on the walk are stunning, especially out to Mana Island and the sea beyond - and in the far distance, the margins of thre Marlborough Sounds. Nearer to hand, seabirds occupy the cliffs and you may see model aeroplane enthusiasts flying thewir planes. The walks also involve a number of stiles, just to add to the experience. The loop walk, plus there-and-back on the two branches adds up to a total length of about 9 km - so it's easy to sp[end half a day here, and is well worth the time. |
