To go to Tauherenikau Gorge, take Wakefield Road off SJ2 in Featherston (almost opposite junction with SH53) and follow it as ir becomes Underwood Road and continue to the end, where the gravel road swings left as Bucks Bush Road. Follow this to the campsite at the end. The walk starts from the southern/western side of the campsite. To reduce the height you have to gain if you're planning to , a good place to start is at the summit of the Remutaka Pass, from where the track runs off northwards. You vcan also head towards Mount Froith from here, but if that's your target it might be better to start at the top of the Remutaka Pass, thus saving a lot of climbing. In eaither case, be warned that this track is not especially well-maintained. |
Description |
I've only ventured a few hundred metres onto these tracks are some of the less well-known and less frequently walked in the Tararua area, which might either deter or encourage you. One downside is that they are therefore not particularly well-maintained, and although some sections follow relatively clear tracks or roads, others may be overgrown and poorly marked. The trip to the gorge is the least daunting choice, but even that can be hard going. So whatever you do, be prepared for some real tramping - and take care. |
