Description |
This is an easy walk along the Clutha River, on a path that has some pleasant tree-lined sections and is reasonably tidy and only occasionally degraded or littered, so is better than average for riverside trails in New Zealand. It's most inmteresting features, however, are the little township of Clyde - with plenty of history and some good, domestic architecture, and some good cafes - and the strange mining landscape made by Earnsleugh Tailings, which are well worth a visit in their own right. |

Further information |
The Alexandra Anniversary (aka Millennium) Walk was established to mark Otago's 150th anniversary, in 1998, and provides a pleasant and easy walk along the Clutha, south of Lake Dunstan. It can be completed in either direction, but whichever way you do it, spend some time in the village of Clyde, the old part of which is a lovely example of a mining settlement - though one suspects the standard of eating has improved since its original days, for it now offers some wonderful cuisine.
There is lots to see on the way. Not just views of the river, but also old mine tailings, bits and pieces of mining equipment, and more distant glimpses of the surrounding hills. The track is well-maintained, though like all gravel tracks somewhat over-engineered for walking. It is also often busy, both with walkers and cyclists, and this is rabbit country - so if your dog is anything like our springer, you'll need to keep it under close control.
