Description |
The campsite in Waiohine Gorge gives access to walks that extend into much of the southern Tararuas. For an easy but relatively long walk, take the Lower Waiohine Track, which followes the river through the gorge and out into the wider valley beyond, utimately to link up with the Totara Flats walk and tracks out of Holdsworth. For a loop walk, take the Cone Saddle Track ca. 4 km north of the campsite, and head up to Cone Saddle, then fork left (south-eastwards) up to the ridgeline and down to the starting point. But if you're fit, experienced and want something more challenging, there are many other options from Cone Saddle: north-west up onto the open summit of The Cone from where you can loop around to join the Torara Flats walk; or north and west up onto Mount Hector and beyond; or south-east, down into the Tauherenikau River and its own network of tracks. To put it simply, you can go almost anywhere from here - and of course, the dog can come too. But for the longer walks you need to know what you're doing! |
