South of the Kawarau River on eastern side of Lake Wakatipu, turn off SH 6 at the signposted junction to the Remarkables ski area. The track starts at the ski field buildings. |
Description |
This walk climbs steadily from about 1600 metres above sea level at the start to 1800 metres at the lake. As well as the views there's lots to see including glacially scoured corrie in which the lake sits, and the sparcse but interesting Alpine plants. There are information boards to help you. The climb is steady and quite demanding, though to start with it follows a skifield road. But from the Alta Chairlift it becomes an unformed track marked by cairns and flagstones. Keep to this not only so that you dont lose your way, but also to avoid damaging the vegetation. |
