Description |
In its entirety, Carter's Bush is no more than about 10 ha in area, and of this we only see a small part if we follow the loop walk in the reserve. Frustratingly, too, it's probably the most damaged portion, for while one can see clusters of mature totara and other lowland forest on the higher ground, the track keeps to some fairly neglected and weedy wetland areas and second growth forest. In keeping with this sense of neglect, the track is also rather overgown in places, while the boardwalk that makes up about a third of the circuit is beginning to look aged and weathered. Hidden in the wetlands, however, are some significant species, including the rather rare Coprosma pedicellata andbrown mud fish. While I wouldn't advise making a special journey to see Carters Bush, therefore, if you're in the area it's worth stopping to walk the dog. |
