Description |
These two short but steep walks are worth the effort for the views they provide into the spectacular glaciated country of the Hakatere Conservation Park. Mount Sunday is undoudtedly the more interesting and easier walk. The hill is a riche moutonee, scraped almost bare by glaciers and gives stupendous views; and the climb is relatively short, though there's a river crossing to get there. Mount Potts is a very different beast. There's a zig-zagging track to start with, but from halfway up the hill the route is unmarked, and the slopes are steep. Care is required! Note, also: DoC information is contradictory on dog-access on these two walks. However, what I take to be the definitive source (see Hakatere brochure in Further Information) lists non-dog areas, and shows maps of where dogs can't go, and neither show these walks, so my interpretation is that they are dog-friendly. |
