Innumerable opportunities for access along the length of the trail. In the north, the best place to join or leave it is Riverbank Road, on the south side of Otaki. In the south, it effectively starts at the north end of Tilley Road, on the east of Paekakariki. |
Description |
Starting in the north, in Otaki, the Kapiti Coast Trail (aka Coast 35 in honour of its 35 km of length) runs all the way to Paekakariki in the south and provides a dog-friendly shared path all the way. For much of that length it runs next to SH1 (the Kapiti Expressway), and sometimes next to the railway as well, so it's not always a quiet and pleasant route - but where it can, it weaves away and finds soemthing like peace. In places also, there are intersecting walkways, or nearby beaches, which allow you to find your own escape. Be warned, however: dog rules on Kapiti beaches are a law unto themselves, and totally confusing. Not only do different stretches of beach have differing rules between summer and winter and each other, but in places even the same stretch of beach is zoned into strips with different rules (see map below). My advice, therefore, is to act sensibly, keep your dog leashed on the shared ctcleway, and use your judgement according to the season and the context elsewhere. |
