Several access points along the route, but for the longest possible walk start at the end of Melrose Road, near the river, off SH77 on the south-west side of Ashburton. Alternatively, park at the south end of Trevors Road on the south east side of Ashburton (near Ashburton Motorcycle Park). |
Description |
This track is one of a pair following the Ashburton River. It runs along the northern side of the river, starting at one picnic site and ending at another. The western end is close to SH1 so is noisy; the eastern one is at the coast, in Hakatere and is much more pleasant. If you plan to do the whole walk (all 19+ km of it), presumably with a vehicle waiting at the far end, it's therefore probably best to walk from west to east. And if you want an even longer walk, you can add in the Lake Hood walk on the south side of the river. |
